L. Preston, Union officer

Title

L. Preston, Union officer

Description

Sepia-toned portrait of an officer with a full, drooping mustache, wearing the uniform of the Union infantry during the Civil War. He wears a junior officer's frock coat with shoulder bars and a belt and dark-colored sash about his waist. He rests on gloved hand on the hilt of his sword, which stands point down in front of him, while he leans against a classically styled pillar with the other arm. His forage cap bears the insignia of the Infantry, and he stands in front of a soft, romantically styled rural background. This photo was included in a collection donated by a Forest Grove resident, Ruby Bamford. The Bamford family was from England, but lived in Illinois during the Civil War. They settled in the Gales Creek area in the early 1880s. It is not known whether the photos belonged to the Bamfords or to Mrs. Bamford's natal family before their donation.
