Black and white image of tree limbs and other debris on the sidewalk in front of the Washington County Library building. Most likely this was after the Columbus Day Storm, a massive windstorm that ravaged northern California, Oregon, and Washington on October 12, 1962. Forty seven people died, hundreds were injured, and in Oregon alone the cost of damages was estimated at close to $200,000,000 in current value (equivalent to anywhere between $3 billion and $5 billion in today's dollars.)
Colorized photo card print of Banks, Oregon. Photo shows a packed dirt road and a clear sky. On the right of the image is a vacant lot and a single pole with a power line running to and from it. Across a dirt street, a series of two-story wooden buildings with tall, square fronts and small windows. People stand on the covered porch of the first building. On the left of the image, another building with a pitched roof and square front has '[?] Mercantile' lettered over a covered porch, where a man leans against the railing. On the street in front of him waits a wagon with a two horse hitch. Visible just beyond the building and before the next is a power pole with a single cross-bar and glass power line insulators. Boardwalks link the buildings, with steps leading up to the porches. Visible in the background is a low hill and a number of leafy trees, pine and deciduous.
Women working on either side of a container belt, appearing to sort small fruit. Elongated covered lights are suspended from a high ceiling to hang above the belts, and the floor appears to be concrete. A white wall runs down the right side of the image, and a double set of conveyor belts/shelves appear at the back of the image. the women wear light-colored shirts, and have their hair held back with scarves and/or up in hair nets. All have shorter hair, curlier on the bottom than at the top.
Workers of various ages sit along both sides of two cannery belts, sorting small fruits. All but one elderly man in the upper right of the image are women. They wear white shirts and hair nets; one has a dark sweater on and another a flowered shirt. All have shorter hairstyles, most straight on top and curly towards the bottom; most have hairnets, but several wear their hair held back by headscarves. Elongated covered lights are suspended from a high ceiling to hang over the conveyor belts, and the women sit on stools with cans at their sides. One woman holds a bucket over her arm. In the left background is a bare plank wall, with studs visible; the back right wall shows unidentifiable machinery. Some of the women wear glasses.
A group of children, four girls and eight boys, stand on the steps to a wooden building. The children on the lower steps are younger than those toward the top. The boys wear overalls and long-sleeved shirts, buttoned to the neck. A small girl with a light colored dress and a large white ribbon in her hair holds a chalkboard with the school's name and date written on it. The three older girls at the top of the image wear pinafores over long-sleeved dresses. One is dark, and the dress dark with light stripes. Another man has one foot up on a shelf or stool, wears a long apron over overalls and a light-colored shirt, and has a cap. Various tools are hanging on a table to the front of the image, and an anvil with a hammer resting on it stands in front of and between the men. The shop disappears into the background of the image, with studs holding up the ceiling, bare rafters overhead, and plank walls with bare studs. A sign with illegible writing is posted on one support, while posters are visible on the wall at the front of the image. Photo on cardstock, with handwritten label taped beneath.
A dirt road leads to a bridge across a body of water. A rail fence runs beside the road and across the bridge. Bare branches of trees poke up alongside the road, and on the opposite side trees, buildings and mountains are visible. Power poles appear to be protruding from the water, which is still and reflecting the trees and foliage along the banks.
A large bungalow style house, two story with dormer windows, sits at the back of a large field. A porch wraps around the first story of the house, and a white rail fence runs around the building. A square wire fence is visible in the foreground, and hills rise to the right and behind the house. A thick grove of pine trees stands between the two hillsides. Image is scalloped on edges and printed on glossy white paper.
Three men stand in front of an elongated gable-roofed barn. An awning-style roof extends over an open barn door with a wooden ramp leading into the building. To the left is a set of closed doors, and a dead sapling. Posters and printed material adorn the open doors of the middle section. A glass double pained window is above the awning, with a sign suspended perpendicular to the building. The right section of the building has a window-sized opening and then an empty doorway. The men stand on a boardwalk or planked road. The man on the left stands akimbo and wears a dark shirt with white stripes, long-sleeved, with a leather apron over dark pants, and a cap. The man in the middle has a mustache, and a dark shirt with a leather apron over dark pants and a cap. A large wheeled engine dominates a field surrounded by tall, bare pine trees. The engine consists of a round, riveted barrel, with a smokestack at one end and a protrusion with gauges and handles at the fore end. A door with a round vent occupies the front end, which is bracketed by large metal spoke wheels. Smaller wheels are placed at the other end, beneath a smokestack and a large gear which supports a long belt. The belt stretches across the picture to disappear under a platform which is covered over with a large amount of dried plant material. About a dozen men stand along side the belt, which runs above their heads. One man with a pitchfork stands on the haystack; another stands beside the opening where the belt disappears into the haystack. All the men wear pants, hats with brims, and long-sleeved work shirts buttoned up to the neck. A fence made of poles fastened to triangular supports runs behind the group of workers, separating the work area from the trees. Written in black ink on the bottom right is 'Boge and Hinton Machine. Farmington, Oregon. For Threshing Grain.'
A large, steam-powered harvester in a harvested field. One man stands on the deck of the machine, hand on a steering wheel. Black smoke issues from the round smokestack in front of him; a little girl in a hat with a wide brim, uplifted in back and sporting a feather, stands next to him. On the lower level, a woman leans over a rail, looking toward two other men at the back of the machine; one man sits on a deck with his feet on the ground; the other stands behind him working with the machine. The machine has metal wheels with spokes, one appears to be about the height of a grown man. Hoses and metal gears are visible. A barbed wire fence runs across the foreground of the image.
A large field of strawberries, rows running into the distance. Various unidentified people are at work in the field, kneeling and working with the plants. Most are men, though two are identifiably women in skirts. Almost all wear hats; some have fabric draped over their heads. The ground appears dry and dusty. In the background, thick stands of pine trees are visible. 'Strawberry field near Hillsboro [struck out] Banks' is typed across the top of the image.
A group of about two dozen adults of various ages pose in front of a building. Eleven women stand in an angled line before a raised porch. Two more women sit on the porch, and eleven men stand on the porch behind the women. The women wear long skirts with full, tucked in blouses, and all wear their hair up; their clothes appear worn and dirty. Two have their hair pulled back in snoods with large bows tied on top of their head, two others appear to have large, shapeless hats on the back of their heads. The woman at the left end of the line has a crisp white shirt tucked into a dark skirt, a bow tie, and wears a low-crowned hat with a wide, stiff brim. She holds a second hat like the first. Next to her, a woman wears a dark shirt with white polka-dots and a necktie, tucked into a dark skirt. All but one of the men wear overalls and work shirts. Two wear hats. One man at the right side of the group wears a three-piece suit with a bow tie, a watch on a fob, and a light-colored fedora. The building in the background is wooden, with large double doors and windows visible above the porch level. Written in dark ink on the mat below the image is: 'Carnation Milk Co. workers, Hillsboro 1904 - 1st St. & Maple.'
A large square three-story building with 'CARNATION MILK PRODUCTS COMPANY' lettered across the top fills most of the picture. 'CONDENSARY NO. 5' is lettered below. Wire fences with barbed wire surround a driveway along one side of the building, with a large gate. Smoke rises from a smokestack behind the building, and power lines criss-cross the area above and beside the building. Stairs lead up to a door in the corner. Two cars are parked alongside the building, and muddy ground fills the foreground of the image.
Three wagons with two-horse hitches, their beds filled with milk cans, stand in front of a large white wooden building. Several men in hats and work clothes stand around the wagons and on the porch at the rear of the building. The building has large windows and square vents on top; at the back a large tank with chimney-like extensions. A packed dirt road runs through the foreground of the image, and bare trees are visible on the skyline in the rear.
A group of women and one man pose in a studio. Two are seated in front, six sit in chairs, and another six stand in back with a man. All but two hold brass instruments: tubas, trumpets, baritones, etc. A bass drum sits to the left and a snare drum to the right of the two women in front of the group. All the women wear white, high-necked, long sleeved shirts with puffed sleeves and front pleats, tucked into dark, full-length skirts, and either a bow or a long tie. Their hair is up, some drawn back from a center part, others in a full pompadour style. The man pictured in the middle of the back row wears a dark suit with a rigid collar and a tie, and has a well-groomed mustache. Oval photo pasted on dark heavy cardstock. On the bottom of the image in black ink is written 'Pope S. Bennett, Hillsboro, OR, 1902' with a flourishing underscore. 'Pope S. Bennett, Hillsboro, Or' is also printed in white on the lower right corner of the mat.
Two men in suits stand at the corner of a light-colored, two-story stone building. Behind them is a recessed entry way, on either side of the entry way are large pane glass windows with transom windows above. Lettering the windows on the first floor is not legible. 'Dr. Pollock Dentist' is visible in the two windows perpendicular to the corner. '[illegible] Real Estate' is visible on the windows to the left of the upper corner. An electric trolley car is entering the image from the right, and a man runs along the street in front of it. Power lines for the trolley run across the image, and the street appears to be dirt.
A three story corner building faces a flooded street on two sides. The building is stone, with contrasting layers of brick. The water appears to stop at sidewalk level, and the street and other buildings rise out of the water to the right of the image. People in dark clothing gather at the sidewalk just above the bank building. The building's first floor has recessed doors in the main corner and left corners, topped with oval cornices. A sidewalk is barely visible, and gas streetlights with three globes each stand opposite each other on the two angles of the corner. A fire hydrant and the beginning of a sidewalk are visible in the foreground of the image. See WCMpic_000157ad.jpg for close up image.
