Photo of a two-story building with three men standing in front of it. The men wear dark suits and have short hair. The first floor of the building is dominated by large glass windows and two sets of recessed doors. On the windows are the words Dry goods, Boots and Shoes, Hardware The second story features double-hung windows with gothic style panes and decorative arches in the brickwork above them. Just below the eaves is a section of decorative tiles. Three signs evenly spaced across the front roof are bracketed with decorative ironwork scrolls, and read 'Schulmerch and Son,' 'Union Block 1890' and 'F.A. Bailey.' Butted up against the building on the right is a single-story building with a wagon in front of it. A sign on this building reads 'Rock Island Plow Co. Implements.' The street is plank and dirt, and a power pole with a single cross-bar stands in front of the second building.
A black and white photograph of a long narrow grocery store, with three people visible. One lady in a medium-toned skirt and lighter shirt tucked in with a belt stands behind a counter with a roll of butcher paper in a framework. Before the counter stands a woman in a long, dark, patterned skirt, a short dark cape and a flat dark hat. In the background of the image, a man in a suit with a darker vest over a white shirt and tie stands beside a dolly. Various crates, bags, and wooden barrels line the open floor space, with fruit or vegetables visible in at least one crate. Brooms are arranged against one back wall, and canned goods and bottles line the shelves and share counter space with neatly piled bags of goods. Small glass display cases rest on one counter, and another display case is visible to the right of the man. A sign stating 'Lion Coffee' is posted on the back wall, and another illegible sign is posted above a wooden desk that stands behind a wood stove.
Two men in suits stand at the corner of a light-colored, two-story stone building. Behind them is a recessed entry way, on either side of the entry way are large pane glass windows with transom windows above. Lettering the windows on the first floor is not legible. 'Dr. Pollock Dentist' is visible in the two windows perpendicular to the corner. '[illegible] Real Estate' is visible on the windows to the left of the upper corner. An electric trolley car is entering the image from the right, and a man runs along the street in front of it. Power lines for the trolley run across the image, and the street appears to be dirt.
A three story corner building faces a flooded street on two sides. The building is stone, with contrasting layers of brick. The water appears to stop at sidewalk level, and the street and other buildings rise out of the water to the right of the image. People in dark clothing gather at the sidewalk just above the bank building. The building's first floor has recessed doors in the main corner and left corners, topped with oval cornices. A sidewalk is barely visible, and gas streetlights with three globes each stand opposite each other on the two angles of the corner. A fire hydrant and the beginning of a sidewalk are visible in the foreground of the image. See WCMpic_000157ad.jpg for close up image.
Man stands on the step in front of a narrow brick building with a wooden front, fronted by a concrete sidewalk and curb, with an open garage door in the building next door. The man wears a long coat over a suit and has what appears to be a top hat. The building has a large, four-paned window next to a door with four panes of glass in the upper half and a transom above, and then another, smaller set of double windows on the other side. The street is slanted, and the building rests on what appears to be a poured concrete foundation. White lettering at the bottom of the picture, and a typewritten note is glued to the top.
Photo of two-story brick building set on a corner with background blanked out. The building is dark brick, with the door facing the corner, set off by columns and a triangular pediment on top. On the left side, several recessed entranceways are framed by windows above and below, and a sign reading 'Hillsboro Mercantile Co.' stretches across the top of the first story. A concrete sidewalk runs in front of the building, and the street in the foreground of the image is either wet or muddy. Image is framed with white and dark squares, mounted on cardstock. Printed on the bottom of the image is 'Hillsboro Commercial Bank.'
Two oxen pull a wooden plow in a field. The plow is being held down by a man in slacks, shirt, and with a straw trilby. The reins are held by a man in Egyptian costume, consisting of a white scull cap, a shirt with reflective circular disks sewn on the yoke, and a striped cotton skirt. He holds a long, thin goad in one hand. The field is bordered by a barbed wire fence, and a number of cars and a stock truck are parked alongside the road beyond a ditch filled with plants. Three girls sit on a plank fence, looking down the road at something. They wear skirts and shirts tucked in and have short hair. Power lines run along both sides of the road, held up by poles with from one to three cross-bars. Thick stands of leafy trees are visible in the background of the image.
Two white brick buildings face each other across a paved lot. Both buildings are three stories tall, with windows spaced regularly along all visible sides. Pipes or a conveyor belt connect the buildings across the paved area. The building on the right is shorter in length; next to it stands an elevated tank. The bottom of the tank is even with the roof of the building, and behind it a large smokestack . A large ramp leads up to a loading dock on the far building, where two delivery trucks with milk cans are parked. Men stand in the bed of one of the trucks. Power poles with perpendicular arms support power lines running in front of the buildings. The photo has been glued to a cardboard background, cut out with an oval top, and white clouds have been inked onto the background around the image. 'Carnation Milk Products, Hillsboro, Oregon' is printed in blue ink on the upper left corner.
