Hatfield was the Governor of Oregon from 1959 to 1967 and later served about thirty years as a United States senator. He died in 2011. Packwood was an Oregon senator from 1969 to 1995, when he resigned following a scandal.

Some 27,000 turkeys from the area were impounded after state and federal tests showed the birds were contaminated with PCB, a cancer causing chemical. The turkey industry generated nearly eight million dollars for the area, and the turkey lunch was sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce to offset adverse publicity brought on by the impounding of the birds.
