Letters relating to the Rajneesh crisis between Rob Brown, reporter for 100 FM, and Governor Atiyeh. Brown had recently heard Atiyeh speak about the Rajneesh at a Medford Rotary meeting and is writing with additional thoughts. He compares the Rajneeshees, as an unpopular religious sect, to the Mormons in 1800s America. Brown warns that there is a danger in responding too harshly to the Rajneesh, and as an example, he encloses a copy of an 'Extermination Order' that Governor Boggs of Missouri issued against the Mormons in 1838. Brown expresses respect for Oregon officials's moderate handling of the Rajneesh situation and hopes that violence will not erupt in Wasco County. In a letter of response, Atiyeh agrees that all groups, even unpopular ones, must be handled through legal means. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
A typed message supposedly signed by Laura Bentley on behalf of an anti-Rajneesh group named the Concerned Oregonians of Wasco County. Copies of this typed message were distributed in the Dalles in 1984. This copy came into the hands of Bob Oliver, legal counsel to Governor Atiyeh. The message is overtly racist. It states that the Concerned Oregonians of Wasco County admires the Ku Klux Klan and is making plans to keep Oregon 'pure and white.' The message connects these racist views to the group's opposition towards the Rajneesh community of Wasco County.
Though the message is supposedly signed by Laura Bentley, who was a leader of the Concerned Oregonians of Wasco County group, it was more likely written by Rajneesh followers who were trying to undermine her. Laura Bentley had publicly opposed the Rajneesh during their attempt to flood the county's voter registration rolls with Rajneesh followers in 1984.
Attached to the telegram is a routing slip, showing that Oliver forwarded the telegram to Governor Atiyeh's chief of staff, Gerry Thompson. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver.
Memo from Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel, to Gerry Thompson, the governor's chief of staff. He discusses a telephone conversation he had with Jay Ananda, formerly John Sheffner, who works in the financial department of the Rajneesh organization. The conversation covered the plans to commission an irrigation dam on Current Creek in Wasco County, and further, whether on not a representative of the Governor's staff would be willing to make an appearance. Bob Oliver requests they explore the possibilities of a representative participating. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver.
Letter from Ram Das Singh Khalsa, attorney for the Rajneesh, to the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors. Enclosed was a copy of a reply from Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh's attorney Swami Prem Niren. The reply was to a letter also attached that had been written to Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh regarding comments made in The Goose Is Out, a book written by Bhagwan. Certain comments in the book were considered by one of Khalsa's clients, Yogi Bhagwan, as defamatory. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Interoffice memo from Fred D. Miller, director to Bob Oliver, assistant to the Governor regarding rumored gates on Wasco County Road. The memo acts as a response to inquires made by a local anti-Rajneesh group about gates, city funds from the Highway Division and traffic signs. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Letter from Robert E. Stacey Jr, staff attorney for 1000 Friends of Oregon, to Wasco County Judge Cantrell and Commissioners. The general purpose of the letter is to discuss the Rajneesh Neo-Sannyasin application for a mass-gathering permit, related to a large festival they wished to hold. The land the festival is to be held on is zoned for 'exclusive farm use' which does not specify a difference between temporary or permanent use and so the application is being called into review. Individuals from 1000 Friends of Oregon wish to see that the festival does not take place or a bond assuring payment for damage be placed upon the Rajneesh Foundation. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Letter from Wasco County Judge Richard Cantrell to Bob Montgomery in the Oregon governor's office, informing him of local feelings in Antelope regarding the Rajneesh community. He states that many of the ranchers around the area believe the Rajneesh have the legal right to act as they please. However, The 1000 Friends of Oregon and some other residents continue to express animosity towards the Rajneesh. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Letter from Charles K. Ashaker from the Water Quality Division of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality to Dorothy M. Brown, Director of Planning for Wasco County. Ashaker explains that the Department of Environmental Quality issued a permit to Rajneesh Neo-Sannyasin International Commune for a temporary sewage lagoon, which would expire soon after the end of a planned festival. They request that in the future the anti-Rajneesh group '1000 Friends of Oregon' be informed if an application is received for a permanent facility so there may be a hearing. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Letter from Swami Krisha Deva, also known as David Knapp, to Antelope city attorney Keith A. Mobley. On behalf of the Rajneesh living within the county, he expresses the foundation's opposition to a party being held by Loren Reynolds, a local person who had previously shown hostility towards the Rajneesh. The Rajneesh ask that the party be reconsidered to prevent potentially violent incidents from occurring. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
Letter from Police Major K. L. Lamkin to John C. Williams, the Superintendent of the Oregon State Police department, regarding outcomes of a security meeting in reference to an upcoming Rajneesh Festival. In attendance were members of the Oregon State Police, Wasco County Sheriff Brown, Jefferson County Sheriff Perkins, Jefferson County District Attorney Mike Sullivan, representatives from the Rajneesh commune and Project Centurion, a security based corporation. All sheriffs in attendance agreed to actively patrol the area. The security corporation, Project Centurion was predicted to receive the contract, their record showing no previous experience with crowd control. This being a concern of the department, it was filed with the rest of the Rajneeshpuram files, this one marked 'Guru file', by Bob Oliver, assistant to Governor Atiyeh.
An inter-office letter from Oregon's Public Utility Commissioner, Gene Maudlin and the Assistant to the Governor, Pat Amedeo. Maudlin explains that the Wasco County Electric Cooperative will be forcibly condemning certain land to allow additional electric lines supplying electricity to Big Muddy Ranch. Big Muddy Ranch was the former name of the land that was the site of Rajneeshpuram, a community of followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh. Maudlin notes that their use of electricity 'already exceeds what Wasco County can deliver with present facilities.' This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
A memo from Governor Atiyeh's secretary Glenna Hayden describes a conversation with Barbara Bailey from the Wasco County Planning Commission. Bailey expressed her concerns over the Rajneesh and their growing control over the county. She expresses to the governor that a meeting should be held between the Rajneesh, the Antelope people, and Wasco County planners. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
A memo to Governor Atiyeh's Chief of Staff, Gerry Thompson, from Bob Oliver, his legal counsel. Oliver recounts the events of a meeting regarding the Rajneeshees with residents of Antelope, as told to him by Jefferson County district attorney Mike Sullivan and Bob Davis. Both individuals witnessed heightened aggression and were threatened. Bob Oliver closes the letter by stating that there will be another meeting in The Dalles with the district attorney for both The Dalles and Antelope. He also expresses that Governor Atiyeh should consider potentially making a statement promoting safety and an amicable solution. This item was a part of the papers of Bob Oliver, Governor Atiyeh's legal counsel.
