Dress code protesters photograph with handwritten notes
-
Description
-
A reprinting of a photograph that was probably originally taken in 1967, showing a Pacific University student wearing a tie but no shirt, standing on a table surrounded by other students. This image was printed in Pacific's alumni magazine years later with the caption "Do you remember?", which was a regular magazine feature intended to solicit letters from alumni about their memories of campus life. This copy was annotated by Arlene Bodmer Harouff (Class of 1967). She named most of the students in the image and provided her memory of the event, which she identified as "Rook Week 1963." If correct, this would mean that the photograph showed a freshman initiation prank.
Other photographs taken on the same day, however, show that this was a staged protest against Pacific University's dress code, probably in March 1967. In that month, about 150 male students conducted a sit-in demonstration against Pacific's dinner dress code, which required "all men to wear a jacket and tie to dinner and women to wear either a dress or skirt as well as heels twice a week" (See: The Index, Mar. 6, 1967). In the other photographs, it is clear that the woman on the bottom left is wearing a placard that reads "We protest," and that the protest related to the dress code. See: PUApic_015906, PUApic_015907 and PUApic_015908. This photograph appears to have been staged in order to dramatize the protest, possibly for use in a publication. The original prints were stamped by Pacific's Office of Public Information (i.e. its publicity department). It appears to have been taken in the student lounge of McCormick Hall.
From left to right, those visible in the photograph are identified as: D. Stewart Topley (OD, Class of 1968); either Patricia Ann Mayhew Brannock (Class of 1967) or Laurie Collins (as identified by a different alumnus); Unidentified student standing on table; Belinda Aldridge; Arlene E. Bodmer Harouff (Class of 1967); and Sally Green.
