Pacific University Librarian with an early OCLC computer
-
Description
-
A Pacific University librarian sitting at an early computer terminal, located in the staff area of Scott Library, in July 1978. This was likely the first computer in the library, and possibly the first in the university to be connected to be able to download data from a remote network via a modem (pre-internet). The label on the side, "OCLC," refers to a cooperative library service that allowed the librarians to download catalog records for books, a process called "copy cataloging." The computer was probably used only for that purpose. Manuals sit on the right; and another device, possibly a printer where library catalog cards could be printed, is barely visible on the left. This is one of a set of photographs that appears to have been posed in order to demonstrate the range of work that was taking place in the library.
