Midhat Pasha Souq in Damascus postcard
Title
Midhat Pasha Souq in Damascus postcard
Description
A postcard showing pedestrians shopping at the Midhat Pasha Souq, a covered market on "Straight Street" (Al-Shari' al-Mustaqim; or Via Recta in Latin) in Damascus, Syria. This postcard was sent by Lieutenant Lon Holbrook to the Oregon Governor's Office. Holbook was performing security during Governor Victor Atiyeh's 1984 trade mission to the Middle East.
Holbrook's note reads: "Sat. 314. Hi everyone: The picture on the front is where we did most of our shopping. I'm done for sure because I'm broke. Can you imagine arriving there in a motorcade with lights and sirens and security in a cloud of dust. The store keepers just opened their cash drawers. Leaving here today, wish it were for home. -Lon"
