Description
A professional portrait of John W . Gates . He is standing with one hand resting on a stump and the other holding a lever action rifle that is resting on the floor . Behind him is a backdrop of a creek with shrubs and trees along its banks . John looks to be about 25 year old and has a well groomed mustache that goes below his lips . He is wearing a cowboy style hat with a round brim , a long sleeved shirt with a bow tie and vertical stripped trousers . A watch chain is clipped to the shirt , he has a couple of long slender items in his breast pocket and is wearing a cartridge belt and a fairly long , around 12 inch , sheath knife .

[front] John Gates ; [back] John Westley Gates : Born in Burt County , Nebraska in 1864 , John loved plants . When he moved to Oregon and had his own farm , he planted many plants and varieties of apples that would grow in this more moderate climate . He an Minnie cleared their farm by logging , burning and using goats to eat the brush . He farmed with horses into the 1930s . He kept the horses even after he bought an IH tractor with iron wheels and cleats . The tractor towed one of the first combines in the area , it was also an IH (International Harvester) Number 8 with high iron wheels . He milked cows , raised chickens and pigs , as well as grain and hay . He planted 8 acres of filberts , one of the orchards in the area . John was about 5’ 6” tall , a smallish man with a size 7 boot . He and Minnie were married in Forest Grove on Valentine’s Day 1896 , they had three sons .
